On April 8, 2024, a historic total solar eclipse will cast a shadow over parts of the United States, causing widespread travel from Texas to Maine and many states and cities in between.According to NASA, a total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth and briefly covers the entire surface of the Sun.

The path of the moon’s shadow across Earth’s surface is called totality, and viewers must stay within the 185-mile-wide path to see the April 8 total solar eclipse. Visit USA to know when to see the total solar eclipse or even later. To find out when a partial eclipse will be visible in different parts of the United States, use NASA’s Eclipse Explorer tool.

Michael Zeller, a solar eclipse mapping expert at GreatAmericanEclipse.com, told ABC News that 31 million people in the United States already live in the path of totality, bringing the astronomical event closer to their doorstep.

But for those off the course, enjoying the whole event requires an investment of time and money.

According to the American Astronomical Society, eclipse chasers are those willing to do almost anything and travel almost anywhere to see the whole thing.

“There is a very active community of solar eclipse chasers, and we will do our best to observe the eclipse anywhere in the world,” Seiler said. “We have all gathered to witness the unimaginable beauty of a total solar eclipse.”

The April 8 total solar eclipse, which will bring together eclipse experts and novice skywatchers, will be the largest mass tourism event in the United States in 2024, according to Seiler, who compared it to “50 national Super Bowls united.”

“When you look at the number of people in the path of the total solar eclipse, we estimate that those numbers are equivalent to about 50 simultaneous Super Bowls across the country from Texas to Maine,” he said.
